Name: Dennis Bush, Republican

Office/District: State Rep. District 3

Hometown: Cleghorn

Profession: Farmer

Why running for office: “Well, I’m currently completing my second term as county supervisor. What really made me decide to run is three reasons really. One is that I really think someone who understands agriculture should represent this area. Agriculture is very important for the Third District. So, not just the people tilling the soil and handling the livestock, but also the people who process those products and get them shipped out to the rest of the world. I really believe that someone who understands agriculture well should represent this district.

“The second reason I decided to run was just because of my experience. The experience I’ve had as supervisor. I have previously served on a school board, so I understand schools. My committee assignments as a supervisor have been in information technology and also mental health. Not only do I understand county government and the workings of county government, but it leads me into my third reason, which is mental health. I’ve been basically on almost all of the mental health committees that Cherokee County has representation on or is responsible for. I serve on the Rolling Hills Mental Health Region board. I have since almost the inception of regions. I also serve on the Cherokee mental health institute advisory committee. Three years ago Gov. Reynolds appointed me to Iowa Mental Health and Disability Services Commission. So, I have quite a good understanding of where the mental health system is in Iowa, what the situation is and I really believe that someone who has an understanding of that needs to be down in the legislature also. I think that combination of my experience will allow me to have good insight into legislation that does come across where you know pretty well how it’s going to affect people here in the district.

“I’ve lived in this area my entire life except for some time I spent in the Marine Core during the early 70s. I’m an Iowa master pork producer, served as President of our local bike club, also served as president of Iowa tandem bicycle club and I’ve been involved also in church activities. I think I’ve served on every church committee there has been and served as parish director for seven years, finance council for eight years. I’ve served on Cherokee County Pork Producer board and served as president for that. I have been involved in quite a few committee activities outside of my farming and county supervisor job.”
