State Sen. Brad Zaun (R-Polk) is ready for the 2020 legislative session. His No. 1 priority is putting more money into mental health funding.

“Considering our revenue situation, which we’re taking in a record amount of revenue, I think one of the top priorities for me personally is that we put more money into mental health funding,” he said. “Second would be maybe revisiting some of the changes we made in regards to income tax reduction.”

Zaun is not on any of the committees that will move that kind of legislation, but those are some of his personal priorities.

As chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Zaun said he’s looking forward to having discussions with Gov. Kim Reynolds on medical cannabis.

“Emphasis on that it is not recreational marijuana,” Zaun said. “I floor managed the bill that was passed that the Governor vetoed. She has some concerns about the THC level and we’re working through that process right now. I have a commitment from her that we will move an expanded medical cannabis bill. So, I’m happy about that.”

Zaun added he is very interested in the proposals sitting in the Capitol that protect life.

“But, most importantly, adding that to the state Constitution, which would ultimately be voted on by the people in the state of Iowa,” he said of the abortion neutrality amendment. “That is something that I’d like to see move as well.”
