***This was one of the most popular stories on The Iowa Standard in 2021. At the end of the year, when things slow down, we republish stories from the year to look back at what readers were most interested about. This story was originally published on July 31.***

A concerned reader of The Iowa Standard sent us some photos that were passed along to them from outside the Social Security building in Des Moines on Friday.

At about 1:15 p.m. a bus pulled up to the building and unloaded a number of Hispanic individuals, according to the person who sent the photos.

We have received photos of mysterious buses traveling the state since we broke the story about the plane of illegal immigrant minors that landed in Des Moines earlier this year.

We called the Social Security office in Des Moines to see what information we could learn about this particular situation.

The recording that plays when the office is called reminds individuals that the office provides in-person services by appointment only for limited, critical situations.

We spoke with the individual at the office who handled the bus full of people on Friday afternoon. All they could say is they had an appointment. They would not say how many people had appointments or how many people were there.

I asked if the office was still only allowing in-person services by appointment for limited, crucial situations as indicated by the phone recording.

The individual told me yes, but there are other instances.

“There are certain individuals, OK, and this would be any and all of them no matter where they come from, that have let’s say never had a social security card and we have to see their official documents and we have to physically see them,” they said.
