Waukee Superintendent Brad Buck sent a message to the Waukee Community School District families that the district is following a process designed to request the review of materials in response to excerpts of three sexually explicit books from the Northwest High School Library being read during Monday night’s board meeting.

In Buck’s email, he admitted one of the titles was also available at Waukee High School.

“Typically that process is intended and expected to begin with hose individuals best situated to address the concern(s) being raised at the school or classroom level,” Buck wrote. “Regardless of how the concerns were raised, for transparency, the books mentioned at the board meeting are unavailable during the pendency of the review.”

Buck said board policy dictates a process of review to determine if each or any of the titles will be returned to the shelves of the libraries.

“Upon the conclusion of the review of each title, a recommendation will be made to the superintendent as to the future availability of these books in school libraries,” Buck wrote.
