***At the end of every year we revisit some of our most popular stories from the calendar year. This article revealed how the West Des Moines School District wanted the sixth-grade track meet to be “reimagined.”***
The West Des Moines School District said administration is asking that the sixth-grade track meet be “reimagined.”
“We want to be mindful of all students, including those who have limited experiences with activities, have anxiety about competing in front of peers, do not have the proper gear, and who do not identify as male or female,” the district said.
The administrative team has two main goals in mind:
- Reduce the competitiveness of the event.
- Increase inclusivity by reducing boy/girl language and grouping.
The administrative team is wanting to hear ideas on how to “rebrand” the sixth-grade track event. The ideas are going to be reviewed during the next elementary job-alike meeting on April 14.
