Today, Iowa House Republicans elected a leadership team to guide the House Republican Majority caucus through the 91st General Assembly.
Rep. Pat Grassley (R-New Hartford) was re-elected to continue serving as Speaker of the House. Grassley was first elected Speaker in 2019 and previously served as Chairman of the Appropriations, Agriculture, and Economic Growth Committees. Grassley farms with his father and grandfather in Butler County.
“I’m grateful to the House Republican caucus for re-electing me as Speaker of the Iowa House. Since Republicans became the majority party in the Iowa House in 2011, we introduced sound budgeting practices, reduced burdensome red tape, innovated new ways to grow a strong workforce, and kept our common sense on social issues. In response to our agenda, Iowa voters have continued to grow our majority.
Majority Leader Windschitl and I were first elected to our roles in 2019 and in every election since, House Republicans have picked up seats. In this election, we protected every incumbent who faced attacks and lies from the left and flipped four seats bringing our majority to a record-setting 67. We continue to represent all 99 of Iowa’s 99 counties and with this expansive representation, we can hear from Iowans and stay in touch with their priority better than ever before. We are eager to get back to work for the people in January.”
Rep. Matt Windschitl (R-Missouri Valley) was re-elected as House Majority Leader. He was first elected Majority Leader in 2019 and previously served as Speaker Pro Tem. Windschitl works for Doll Distributing in Council Bluffs.
“I want to say a big thank you to my colleagues in the Iowa House Republicans caucus for granting me the opportunity to continue to lead this group of hardworking public servants. The message we received from Iowans this election cycle is loud and clear. Iowans support our agenda to protect their freedoms, lower their taxes, eliminate government waste, and fight for the return to common sense. Iowans know they can trust this caucus to deliver on the promises we make. And we are ready to get back to work for our constituents.”
Rep. John Wills (R-Spirit Lake) was re-elected as Speaker Pro Tem, a position he has held since 2019. Wills works as the Clean Water Coordinator for the Dickinson Soil And Water Conservation District.
Rep. Henry Stone (R-Forest City) was re-elected as House Majority Whip. Stone will be serving his third term in the Iowa House. He is a retired Master Sergeant of the United States Air Force.
Assistant Leaders will be elected at a later date.
House Republicans will open the 91st General Assembly with a strong majority of 67 members, the highest number of Iowa House Republicans in its history of having 100 members. The 2025 legislative session begins Monday, January 13th.
