Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is praising President Donald J. Trump for taking swift action to reverse the Biden Administration’s aggressive Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards — rules critics say forced higher costs onto American families while limiting consumer choice.

The decision marks a significant policy shift aimed at curbing regulatory overreach and restoring affordability in the auto market. Under President Biden’s mandate, automakers were required to rapidly accelerate fuel-efficiency targets, a move opponents argued would drive up vehicle prices, limit available models and strain working families already navigating inflationary pressures.

Brent Gardner, Chief Government Affairs Officer at AFP, said President Trump’s rollback represents a long-awaited win for consumers who have borne the brunt of regulatory excess.

“President Trump’s leadership in rolling back these misguided mandates is a win for hardworking Americans,” Gardner said. “Policies that make cars more expensive are a drag on the economy that hurt those who can least afford it. For too long, the previous administration punished families and businesses with overreaching regulations that drove costs up and choice down.”

Gardner added that the Biden-era rules amounted to “all pain, no gain” mandates that did little to advance practical energy solutions while placing unnecessary pressure on the auto industry.

AFP said it plans to actively participate in the regulatory process to ensure that the new policy prioritizes economic freedom, consumer choice and innovation. The organization highlighted its commitment to promoting energy policies that empower families and businesses rather than restricting them through government dictates.

“We will work to advance solutions that empower consumers, encourage innovation and strengthen America’s energy future,” Gardner said.

President Trump’s move is expected to spark debate in Washington as policymakers, environmental groups and industry leaders react to the administration’s shift away from Biden’s regulatory approach. But for AFP and other free-market advocates, the rollback is a major step toward restoring balance, easing regulatory burdens and keeping costs down for the American people.
