Ames High School parents were sent a message from the district regarding mask-wearing. The school is preparing to implement the district’s mask mandate and said it believes in teaching expectations, establishing positive rewards/responses to desired behavior and a tiered approach to challenging behaviors that do not align with expectations.

With that in mind, the school will use the following process and procedure for mask refusal:

Students who forget a mask will be provided one and required to use a disposable mask.

Students are expected to put on their cloth masks before entering the building.

Once inside, students will be required to wear their masks at all times, except during breakfast and lunch.

Teachers will not be required to provide a mask break for all students during their instructional time; however, teachers will provide mask breaks on an individual basis as requested to preserve instructional time and maintain continuity with safety protocols.

The district “strives first to understand” the underlying issues for students who refuse to wear a mask, but recognizes data shows mask-wearing is “essential” to prevent the spread of diseases.

If students refuse, here is the “consequence chart:”

*Depending on the location, the student will be sent to the TLC Room or Student Services.

*While the student waits, the student will be asked to read student and staff testimonials about the importance of wearing a mask.

*The student will meet with a counselor.

*The incident will be entered into Infinite Campus as a minor infraction. The counselor will notify the parents.

*The student will be sent to see an associate principal.

*The associate principal will meet with the student.

*The incident will be entered into Infinite Campus as a minor infraction. The associate principal will notify the parents.

*The student will be sent to see an associate principal.

*The associate principal will call the parents to set up a meeting to discuss virtual learning. The incident will be entered into Infinite Campus as a major infraction.
