Congresswoman Ashley Hinson (IA-01) released the following statement on her co-sponsorship of the bipartisan Food Donation Improvement Act. This legislation extends liability protections to food donors when food is either given directly to someone in need or when a recipient receives a significant discount, making it easier for retailers to donate food to food banks and other charitable organizations.

“With families struggling to afford the basics because of inflation, food banks and other entities that provide meals to those in need have seen an increased demand for their services. This bipartisan legislation removes existing legal barriers that force retailers to throw away good food instead of donating it. This is a win-win: it will help struggling families access free or discounted food while reducing food waste. As grocery prices soar, I’ll continue to pursue innovative solutions to help Iowans put food on the table and fight food insecurity.”  – Congresswoman Ashley Hinson

“Food insecurity is a growing concern for members of our community. We could help alleviate these needs with increased opportunities to repurpose food that would otherwise be discarded.” – Kim Reem, Executive Director of Mission of Hope in Cedar Rapids
