An Ankeny High School Astronomy/Geology teacher called Crystal Koehler reportedly had her students work on a “racism/sexism extension activity” assignment. The assignment was based on the movie “Hidden Figures.”
“The other part of their story is how they triumph over other obstacles such as racism and sexism. Which do you believe this movie emphasized more, the issues of racism or sexism,” the worksheet asks.
Students are asked to keep a tally of each occurrence portrayed in the movie on the chart included related to racism and sexism.
Students are asked what the most surprising example of racism or sexism from the movie was.
Included in the assignment is a guide of key terms to understand for the movie. And here is how it defined the term “Commies.”
“A derogatory term for a person who is a member of the Communists Party, or a person who has communistic beliefs.”
