One of the safest bets at the Capitol is the amount of incredible things you will hear from the pro-abortion lobby during a subcommittee on pro-life legislation. It’s almost as certain as death and taxes, which the same people tend to advocate for, ironically.

Thursday’s subcommittee on a bill requiring Iowa students to be shown a three-minute video on fetal development in the womb was no exception.

The initial irony was hearing from Angela Caulk, a lobbyist for the Humane Society. Caulk wasn’t at the subcommittee on behalf of the Humane Society, but she was for the Family Planning Council of Iowa. And she testified against the bill. It just seems strange someone who advocates so strongly for the safety of animals doesn’t advocate for at least the same level of safety for unborn babies. Well, unborn human babies.

Connie Ryan of the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa and Action Fund spoke against the bill as well, claiming Iowa students should not be exposed to misinformation. Yet she routinely speaks in support of radical “gender identity” ideology. Nothing is more “misinformation” than telling people that a boy can become a girl and vice versa.

Amy Campbell of the League of Women Voters said she was concerned with the words “humanity of the unborn child,” claiming that the phrasing inserts “a different bias” into education.

The obvious question is how would she like to change the words “humanity of the unborn child?” If a “fetus” isn’t an unborn child, then what is it? If it is an unborn child, and it is human, shouldn’t we all recognize the “humanity of the unborn child?”

The group opposed to the pro-life bill couldn’t seem to get their stories in sync. For instance, students from the University of Iowa said the Baby Olivia video is inaccurate because it asserts a fetal heart rate is detectable at 22 days, but “evidence-based” medical practice suggests it isn’t present until six weeks time.

Then, high school students who also opposed the pro-life legislation took issue with the claim about a fetal heartbeat at 22 days, calling it “egregious,” because the heart doesn’t develop until the 10th week of gestation.

So it appears the anti-life crowd can’t get its story straight. If there’s a fetal heart rate at 22 days, or at the latest six weeks as the college students said, how could the heart not be present until 10 weeks?

Anti-life speakers also routinely said the so-called “misinformation” will “harm” Iowa students. But I am guessing the information contained in the Baby Olivia video, or whatever video like it a school decides to use, will be significantly less harmful than the harm done during the process of killing an unborn baby – abortion. I have a hunch they really don’t care about “harming” Iowa kids – especially unborn ones.

Planned Parenthood lobbyist Maize Stilwell said removing references to liberal, regressive medical organizations as “experts” was a “stain” on the state of Iowa. Ironic, considering the presence of Planned Parenthood anywhere leaves a stain of blood from the unborn who are killed in their clinics.

Perhaps the greatest irony of all is the “sinister minister” – Democrat State Rep. Sarah Trone Garriott, who routinely reminds people she is an ordained minister. Yet Trone Garriott of course took the anti-life position.

Trone Garriott took issue with depicting the humanity of an unborn baby because “what happens in the womb is just a small portion of what happens in life cycles and development.”
