President Donald Trump issued a warning to Iran on Sunday after tensions were heightened in the Middle East due to the elimination of Qassam Soleimani.

“The United States just spent $2 trillion on military equipment. We are the biggest and by far the BEST in the world! If Iran attacks an American base, or any American, we will be sending some of that brand new beautiful equipment their way…and without hesitation,” he tweeted.

Late Saturday, Trump said the United States has “targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level and important to Iran and the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, will be hit very fast and very hard. The USA wants no more threats!”

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez did not appreciate Trump’s rhetoric on Twitter.

“This is a war crime,” she wrote. “Threatening to target and kill innocent families, women and children – which is what you’re doing by targeting cultural sites – does not make you a ‘tough guy.’ It does not make you ‘strategic.’ It makes you a monster.”

She also said targeting cultural sites itself is a war crime.

“It should also go without saying that sites like Persepolis (and its PEOPLE) are not only treasures to Iranians, they are gifts to humanity. They tell humanity’s story – that is why authoritarians target them. They want to erase history.”
