Today, Rep. Cindy Axne (IA-03) issued the following statement on the spiking case counts and hospitalizations related to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Iowa:

“Over the past month, the repeatedly shattered records of new COVID-19 cases, the positivity rates, hospitalizations, and outbreaks in congregate living facilities have erased any ability for Iowans to think that this virus is under control in our state.

It is clear that current tactics aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19 in Iowa are not sufficient to stop this latest and most deadly surge of the virus.

Urging personal responsibility is the job of every Iowan when speaking to their friends and neighbors – but in the face of a 50% surge in total cases in the past month and a deeply disturbing spike in hospitalizations, real and direct action must be taken to reverse this trend.”

Three weeks ago, when hospitalizations were at half of the current level, Rep. Axne called on Iowa’s public health and emergency management leadership to provide information on contingency plans available in case of hospital bed shortages.

Rep. Axne has previously called for Iowa to follow recommendations of the White House Coronavirus Task Force and implement a statewide mask mandate to slow the spread of COVID-19.
