Multiple Pella residents have reached out to The Iowa Standard informing us that two transgender adults — one man in a bikini and one adult woman bare-breasted with tape over her nipples — showed up at the Pella Aquatic Center. In addition, at least two underage lifeguards if not more walked off the job due to not feeling comfortable working at the aquatic center any longer.
The Iowa Standard attempted to contact the aquatic center, but it did not answer the phone. We tried from a different number and the center answered. The first employee was asked about the incident and said he had to have us talk with someone else. The second employee hung up on us when asked about the incident.
Another individual called the aquatic center asking for their hours. They then asked if they were fully staffed and the aquatic center said the bottom half pool is closed. They asked if two transgender adults were there and were told the employee could not comment on that. When pressed further, the employee hung up once again.
Customers are being denied refunds on yearly passes and season passes despite being promised a family-friendly aquatic center and experience.
***Update: Three lifeguards and one concession worker walked out of the Pella Aquatic Center on Friday when two adults — one biological male and one biological female — used the pool. The biological male was in a bikini while the biological female had black tape covering her nipples with the rest of her breasts exposed.
The employees do not intend to return to work unless a change is made.
One other lifeguard had already quit prior to Friday’s incident.***
