Name: Scott Cirksena, Republican

Office/District: State Senate District 22

Hometown: Clive

Profession: District sales manager for Kenworth Truck Company

Why running for office: “It became apparent to me that Sen. Schneider was not going to seek re-election. I’ve served the Des Moines metro and the city of Clive for the last 17 years as mayor and as council member. It’s something that I’ve had an interest in, it’s something that I’ve felt called to do for a number of years. But, honestly, Charles is doing such a great job, and he’s such a young man, I thought he’ll be in that seat for a long time and just honestly did not think further about it over the last six or seven years or so. It was kind of off my radar screen. But when I learned of that, his desire not to seek re-election for personal reasons, it made me interested.

“I think I have a lot to offer with a pretty solid background in municipal government, public service, in areas across the spectrum. I think I can benefit the district and can benefit the state of Iowa. I think it’s exciting and I look forward to campaigning, which we’re ramping up now. Obviously we have a primary on June 2. So, we’re excited to get out and talk to residents. I know we’re held up here for a while with the health emergency situation that we’re in, but we’re ramping up regardless in other ways. For me, it’s similar to when I ran for city council in 2003. It’s just something I felt called to do and am interested in doing. I want to serve and serve well.”
