Mason City City Councilman John Lee responded to The Iowa Standard’s inquiry on the RAGBRAI drag show. Lee had previously told a citizen he believes the drag show was “PG-13,” so we asked if he attended or reviewed photos and videos of the event to reach that conclusion or how he reached it.

We also included a video of a drag queen dancing with their pelvic region right in front of the face of an attendee of the show. We also asked if it was PG-13, and who from the city was there making sure anyone under 13 was with their parents.

Lee said he was not in attendance, but from what he has heard and the couple of videos he has seen, he still believes it was PG-13.

He provided the MPAA definition of PG-13:

“Parents strongly cautioned, some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. This rating is a stronger caution for parents that the content included may not be appropriate for children under 13 (pre-teen ages). This may include stronger language, extended violence, sexual situations or drug use.”

Lee said he is a “strong believer” in parental rights.

“I do believe parents get to choose, for the most part, what they feel is best for parents,” he said. “That is why I support homeschool, parental rights when it comes to vaccinations, etc. Even though I would probably not have taken my kids (under 13) downtown after 10 p.m. on a Saturday night, I will defend a parent’s right to do so. I’ll defend the right of a homeschool parent the same way I defend a parent to take their kids to a drag show.”
