Rep. Karin Derry was one of 13 Democrats to sponsor House File 450 in the Iowa House. It is an absurd bill likely to be considered radical by any honest Iowan.

The bill would require “age-appropriate” and “research-based” instruction in human growth and development. Each school board would be required to include instruction regarding consent.

“Consent” is defined as “affirmative, conscious and voluntary agreement to engage in sexual activity.”

The bill goes on to say that it is the responsibility of “each person involved in sexual activity to ensure that the other or others consent to engage in the sexual activity.” It notes that “consent must be ongoing throughout a sexual activity and can be revoked at any time.”

This would be required in first grade under Derry’s bill.

First grade.

Children in first grade are typically six or seven years old.

Who supports this bill?

The Iowa State Education Association. Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault. Planned Parenthood Advocates of Iowa. Planned Parenthood North Central States.
