For some Democrats in the United States Senate, it’s groundhog day. After Democrats cried the sky is falling during confirmation hearings for Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh, they are now proclaiming the end of America due to Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination.
Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts said that Barrett’s vote on the Supreme Court would “put at risk the fundamental rights sacred to our democracy.”
Yes, that “democracy” that we don’t even have. Markey vowed to do everything in his power to stop Barrett from being confirmed.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York agrees that Barrett’s nomination represents the “further degradation of our democracy and the continued politicization of our judiciary.”
Gillibrand added that “even if this process had been legitimate,” Barrett is not fit to serve on the Supreme Court.
Hawaii Sen. Mazie Hirono said that Barrett has an “ideological agenda she won’t acknowledge and an expressed willingness to overturn Supreme Court precedent.”
Sen. Elizabeth Warren calls Barrett an “illegitimate” Supreme Court nominee.
“The awesome power of the presidency is in the hands of a man who spits on our Constitution,” Warren said. “We cannot stand down when Donald Trump tries to hand our highest court — and the rights and liberties of the American people — over to extremists.”
Remember, it was a little more than two years ago when Sen. Chuck Schumer told us that Judge Kavanaugh’s refusal to say whether or not he agreed Roe v. Wade was correctly decided “should send shivers down the spine of any American who believes in reproductive freedom for women.”
Sen. Bernie Sanders warned that Judge Gorsuch would be part of an “extreme right-wing” majority that would attack workers’ rights and women’s rights.
Sen. Dick Durbin said confirming Kavanaugh would “shake the confidence” of millions of Americans in the “integrity of the Court.”
Sen. Cory Booker said that working folk, women, minorities, the disadvantaged and the poor all had their “lives at stake” during the Kavanaugh hearing.
“This is not a drill,” Booker said.
So this over-the-top, Democrat hysteria is nothing new.
There is plenty of precedent for Barrett’s nomination to move forward. Republican senators are not being hypocrites, they’re doing their job.
By the way, if Barrett is confirmed, Sen. Markey said Democrats must move to end the filibuster and expand the Supreme Court in the next Congress.
