Des Moines Black Lives Matter is renewing its calls to defund the police and to abolish prisons as well as the police.

“Des Moines could become the model for police and prison abolition for every other city in the United States,” they tweeted. “Let’s make it happen.”

The group’s “leader” noted an arrest for jaywalking.

“Defund DMPD,” he tweeted. “They don’t deserve our money.”

The Iowa Standard has reached out to every candidate for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives and the Iowa Legislature to see if they agree with this idea.

We will publish responses as we receive them.
