Democrats are once again reaching back years into the past to manufacture outrage against former President Donald Trump, this time using the Senate floor to recycle a long-debunked political talking point.
In a speech Wednesday, Senator Dick Durbin dredged up a private 2018 immigration meeting in the White House — one that Democrats and the media weaponized at the time to smear Trump as anti-immigrant. Durbin, the Senate Judiciary Committee’s ranking Democrat, seized on remarks Trump made at a recent Pennsylvania rally to claim “vindication” over his own version of events from six years ago.
Durbin recounted, in dramatic fashion, what he says happened at that 2018 meeting, repeating the now-familiar allegation about Trump’s supposed “shithole countries” remark. At the time, two Republicans who were in the room — Senators Tom Cotton and David Perdue — publicly stated that Durbin’s claims were false or mischaracterized.
Yet rather than focusing on today’s border crisis — record illegal crossings, cartel-driven chaos, and national-security threats — Durbin devoted his floor speech to personal grievance and political nostalgia.
“For eight years, I have lived with the shadow of people saying that I misled the American people,” Durbin lamented, casting himself as the victim.
Republicans say the timing is no coincidence. With President Biden’s border policies in shambles and public approval on immigration at historic lows, Democrats are desperate to steer the national conversation away from their own failures.
Instead of explaining why millions of illegal immigrants have crossed the southern border under Biden — or why Democratic leaders continue to oppose common-sense enforcement — Durbin chose to relitigate a six-year-old anecdote to score political points.
Durbin went on to call Trump’s 2018 language “an embarrassment,” while ignoring the real embarrassment unfolding right now: sanctuary-city policies collapsing, violent criminals released into communities, fentanyl pouring across the border and Americans demanding tougher policies that Democrats refuse to support.
Republicans note that Durbin’s speech reflects a broader Democratic strategy — deflect from the border disaster by reviving old narratives designed to attack Trump and paint any criticism of uncontrolled immigration as offensive or “vulgar.”
Rather than address the crisis Biden created, Senate Democrats are using valuable floor time to fight old political battles. With the election approaching and immigration emerging as one of voters’ top concerns, Republicans say the American people want solutions — not selective outrage over something said in a closed-door meeting nearly a decade ago.
Durbin’s speech may grab headlines, but it does nothing to fix the border, secure the country or restore accountability. Instead, it reinforces what many voters already believe: Democrats would rather talk about Trump than deal with the consequences of their own policies.
