Senator Joni Ernst and Representative Ashley Hinson were both censured by the Tama County Republican Central Committee this week. The group censured both elected officials due to their support for the DisRespect for Marriage Act.

The Tama County Republican Central Committee said the bill opposes the 2022 Iowa Republican Party platform where it states:

“We believe that traditional, two-parent (one male (XY) and one female (XX)), marriage-based families are the foundation to a stable, enduring, and healthy civilization. We encourage the repeal of any laws allowing any marriage that is not between one natural man and one natural woman.”

The censure resolution continued:

“In line with the Faith and Reality with respect for all Judeo-Christian ethics, that are endowed to us by our Creator we affirm the following; “ Only marriage between one man and one female” shall be recognized by this committee.

With these principles in mind upon which our Judeo-Christian country was founded, Senator Ernst’s vote directly opposes the will of our Creator and her constituents, she is hereby formally censured for her vote on the HR 8404 Respect for Marriage Act.”

The censure resolution on Hinson obviously swaps her name with Ernst’s.

Ernst has been censured by a number of Republican county central committees, including:
Mahaska
Pocahontas
Wright
Hancock
Ida
Des Moines
Van Buren
Guthrie
Sioux
Jones
Madison
Warren
Monona
Black Hawk
Buchanan
Tama
Sources have told The Iowa Standard that other counties are considering taking the same action, but have experienced resistance from the Republican Party of Iowa and leadership within the county party.
Hinson was also censured by the Black Hawk County GOP.
