The Black Hawk County Republican Central Committee is the latest Iowa Republican group to formally censure Sen. Joni Ernst following her vote in support of the DisRespect for Marriage Act and against the Republican Party of Iowa platform. The Black Hawk County GOP also censured Rep. Ashley Hinson who voted in support of the bill not once, but twice.

The censure was agreed to on Thursday, Feb. 16. The resolution reads:

“God-fearing people and the founders of our country recognize that marriage was instituted by the Almighty, Triune God. Senator Joni Ernst’s vote in support of the ‘Respect for Marriage Act’ (HR 8404) is in direct opposition to this God-ordained institution as well as in direct opposition to the Iowa Republican Party Platform, Section 13 under Liberty:
‘We believe that traditional, two-parent (one male (XY) and one female (XX)), marriage-based families are the foundation to a stable, enduring, and healthy civilization. We encourage the repeal of any laws allowing any marriage that is not between one natural man and one natural woman.’
Nothing is more foundational to our society than marriage as instituted by God. By their actions, Senator Ernst and Rep. Hinson directly oppose the expressed will of God and that of their constituents and are hereby formally censured for their vote by the Black Hawk County Republican Party Central Committee.”
Ernst has been censured by a number of Republican county central committees, including:
Mahaska
Pocahontas
Wright
Hancock
Ida
Des Moines
Van Buren
Guthrie
Sioux
Jones
Madison
Warren
Black Hawk
Sources have told The Iowa Standard that other counties are considering taking the same action, but have experienced resistance from the Republican Party of Iowa and leadership within the county party.
