As Russia continues to escalate their aggression toward Ukraine—most recently announcing the execution of more military drills along the Ukrainian border where at least 100,000 Russian troops are massed—U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, is slamming President Biden’s doctrine of appeasement toward the Kremlin and calling for the administration to impose sanctions against Russia.

KWWL covered Ernst’s appearance on CNN’s State of the Union, reporting: “Iowa senator Joni Ernst called for new sanctions against Russia…She also called for the U.S. government to take a more aggressive stance towards Russia.”

In an interview with Martha Raddatz on ABC This Week, Ernst condemned Biden’s doctrine of appeasement and called for the administration to ensure the safety of Americans in Ukraine:

Radio Iowa highlighted Ernst’s call for sanctions against Russia, writing: “Senator Joni Ernst says now is the time for the U.S. to impose sanctions on Russia, to try to prevent an invasion of Ukraine…Ernst said without sanctions now, President Biden is appeasing Russian President Vladimir Putin as 100,000 Russian troops sit at Ukraine’s border.”

The New York Post covered Ernst’s push for the Biden administration to immediately impose sanctions against Russia: “We need to act now,’ the Republican senator from Iowa told CNN’s Dana Bash on State of the Union. ‘When it comes to pushing back against Russia, we need to show strength and not be in a position of doctrine of appeasement, which seems to be how President Biden has worked his administration,’ Ernst continued.”

In an op-ed published by Fox News last week, Ernst doubled down on her call for President Biden to strengthen his posture toward the Kremlin, writing in part: “Russia will continue to scoff at the Biden administration without decisive and proactive action.”

Ernst, a veteran of the Global War on Terrorism, discussed her ongoing push for the Biden administration to protect the rights of Afghan women and girls in an interview with Dana Bash on CNN—a bipartisan effort that has the backing of every single female U.S. Senator.

As talks between the Taliban, U.S. officials, and other countries take place in Europe today, Ernst is continuing to push for more transparency and accountability after the Biden administration green-lighted U.S. taxpayer money to flow through the Taliban and Haqqani Network.
