Full committee consideration: Firearm, school parking areas bill scheduled for today

The following bills are scheduled to be discussed in the Senate Judiciary Committee today. The meeting will be held in Room 22 and is set to begin at 3 p.m.

Headlining the list of bills on the docket is Senate Study Bill 1017, which would allow persons with concealed carry permits to possess a firearm while in a school parking area.

Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee are:

Republicans – Brad Zaun, Dan Dawson, Jake Chapman, Julian Garrett, Zach Nunn, Jason Schultz, Tom Shipley, Amy Sinclair, Annette Sweeney and Zach Whiting.

Democrats – Kevin Kinney, Tony Bisignano, Rob Hogg, Janet Petersen and Rich Taylor.

SSB 1011: Senate Study Bill 1011 was introduced by Sen. Brad Zaun.

The Iowa Peace Officers Association, Iowa State Association of County Supervisors, Iowa State Association of Counties, Iowa County Attorneys Association and Iowa State Sheriffs’ & Deputies’ Association all support the bill.

The Iowa Association for Justice is registered against the bill.

SSB 1017: Senate Study Bill 1017 was proposed by Sen. Brad Zaun.

The Iowa Police Chief Association, Iowa Catholic Conference, Iowa Conference of United Methodist Church, Interfaith Alliance of Iowa Action Fund, Iowa State Education Association and Iowa Association of School Boards are all registered against the bill.

The Iowa Police Chief Association, National Rifle Association of America, Iowa Minuteman Civil Defense Corps and Iowa Firearms Coalition are all in support of the legislation.

SF 7: Senate File 7 was proposed by Sen. Kevin Kinney.

The Iowa Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, Des Moines Public Schools, Iowa Police Chief Association, State Police Officers Council, National Rifle Association of America, Iowa Peace Officers Association, Iowa State Sheriffs’ & Deputies’ Association, Iowa Firearms Coalition, Iowa Fraternal Order of Police and Iowa State Reserve Law Officers Association are all supportive of the bill.

SSB 1003: Senate Study Bill 1003 was proposed by Sen. Brad Zaun.

The Iowa Trust Association, The Iowa Academy of Trust and Estate Counsel and the Iowa State Bar Association are all supporting the bill.

SSB 1002: Senate Study Bill 1002 was also proposed by Sen. Brad Zaun.

The Iowa State Sheriffs’ & Deputies’ Association and Iowa County Attorneys Association are registered for the bill.
