On Wednesdayday, U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Lesko (AZ-08) introduced an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to guarantee the fundamental right of parents to make the best educational decisions for their children is constitutionally protected.

“Parents have a fundamental right to be involved in their children’s education and to be able to choose the best educational options for their families,” said Congresswoman Lesko. “I am pleased to introduce this Constitutional Amendment to protect parents from far-left school board officials and government bureaucrats in the Biden Administration who have actively worked to undermine parental rights and eliminate educational choices for their families.”

This legislation amends the U.S. Constitution to guarantee the fundamental right of parents to choose an alternative to traditional public education and make reasonable choices within public schools for their children. It also ensures parental rights are not denied due to a disability of a parent. This legislation does not apply to a parental action or decision that would end life.

This legislation is supported by Alliance Defending Freedom and ParentalRights.org.

Emilie Kao, senior counsel and vice president of advocacy strategy for Alliance Defending Freedom, said the following about the proposal:

“Parents have the fundamental right to direct the upbringing, education, and care of their children. Sadly, as parents have stood before local school boards and state legislatures across the country to claim that right, they’ve been met by government officials who declare themselves the ultimate determiners of what’s best for children. This includes growing instances of schools actively hiding controversial curricula and critical information about children’s mental and physical health from parents. Thankfully, a growing coalition of parents, leaders, and organizations is standing up for the protection of our children and the fundamental rights of parents. We are grateful to Rep. Lesko for joining this movement by introducing this important proposal to amend the U.S. Constitution. Parents have a right to raise and educate their children consistent with their beliefs and values. Such a vital and fundamental right warrants explicit protection in our Constitution.”
