On Thursday, Governor Brian Kemp signed SB 140, enacting restrictions on the prescription of cross-sex hormones and sex-reassignment surgeries for minors. Georgia is the 12th state to prohibit these procedures in some capacity.
Notably, the new law does not include any ban on puberty blocking drugs and only makes offending healthcare providers “administratively accountable” for violations.
In response, Terry Schilling, president of American Principles Project (APP), released the following statement:
“The explosion of so-called ‘gender transitions’ for minors is a medical scandal on par with some of the worst in our country’s history. In recent years, many thousands of vulnerable children have been chemically sterilized and mutilated to help them live what is essentially a lie—that they can somehow become the opposite biological sex. Yet to date, no one in the multi-billion-dollar transgender industry has been held responsible for this crime. That must change.
“Gov. Kemp’s signing of SB 140 today is a welcome first step toward accountability. However, more must be done. Lawmakers must recognize that the oft-repeated line that puberty-blocking drugs are ‘fully reversible’ is a lie. These drugs have profound, long-term effects on the body’s development, many of which are not fully understood. Moreover, enforcement of these restrictions cannot be merely left to a state medical board, which can be easily swayed by the powerful influence which gender ideology currently wields in our institutions.
“We applaud the actions taken by Georgia lawmakers today towards protecting their state’s children, and we look forward to working with them to eventually strengthen these protections even further.”
