Republican State Rep. Jarad Klein also serves as a member of the Republican Party of Iowa’s State Central Committee. However, the outgoing member of the Iowa House of Representatives made waves on Monday with his endorsement of Democrat State Sen. Kevin Kinney, who is running against Republican State Sen. Dawn Driscoll.

Kinney announced Klein’s endorsement on social media.

“Senator Kinney does not care about partisan politics, and is committed to doing what is best for his constituents,” Klein said. “I hope Republicans join me in voting for Senator Kevin Kinney in this election.”

Kinney voted against many conservative bills. He did not record a vote on a bill that protects women’s sports. He voted against repealing mask mandates for public schools. He voted against the Protect Life Amendment. He voted against prohibiting the implementation of COVID vaccine passports. He voted against charter schools. He voted against the Critical Race Theory ban bill.

Klein told The Gazette he expects there may be some blowback from his endorsement, but he is trying to convey the message that we elect good people to do the job. According to The Gazette, Klein said Kinney is “one of the last Democrats that many of us (Republican lawmakers) could work with.”
