In an alarming move that raised serious questions about respect for civilian control of the military, six congressional Democrats released a video this week urging U.S. servicemembers and intelligence officials to “refuse illegal orders.” Their message, targeted squarely at America’s men and women in uniform, insinuates that President Trump or his administration is issuing unlawful directives — without offering a single example.

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), a former Air Force Judge Advocate General who has spent a career defending the Constitution and overseeing U.S. national security, is calling out the insinuation for what it is: reckless political fearmongering.

In a strongly worded letter, Graham demanded that the lawmakers — Sens. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) and Mark Kelly (D-AZ), and Reps. Jason Crow (D-CO), Chris Deluzio (D-PA), Maggie Goodlander (D-NH) and Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) — publicly clarify exactly what “illegal orders” they are encouraging troops to defy.

“Could you please provide clarity on what orders, issued by President Trump or those in his chain of command, you consider illegal?” Graham wrote.

As Graham made clear, these Democrats are not fringe activists or uninformed spectators. Each has a background in national defense — from CIA service to Army Ranger experience — making their suggestion even more concerning. They know full well that implying widespread unlawful behavior in the chain of command can destabilize trust within the military and sow confusion among those sworn to protect the nation.

Graham noted that he has reviewed the administration’s record closely:

“I cannot find a single example of an illegal order during this administration.”

The senator also emphasized that encouraging troops to question orders based on partisan rhetoric rather than the law is dangerous territory — especially in an era where the left is eager to paint President Trump’s leadership as illegitimate or dictatorial.

The Democrats’ video plays to progressive media narratives but risks real-world consequences. If service members begin hesitating to carry out lawful commands due to political propaganda, national security could be jeopardized.

Graham’s message is simple: If Democrats want to accuse the Commander in Chief of lawlessness, they must present evidence — not insinuations.

Anything less is a direct attack on the integrity of America’s Armed Forces and an attempt to undermine a duly elected president.

As the senator concluded in his letter:

“As a Member of Congress, I believe you owe it to the country to be specific.”

The ball is now in the Democrats’ court. Will they back up their dangerous claims — or admit this was just another attempt to score partisan points at the expense of America’s military?
