The 10 Republican United States Senators who support the gun control compromise all have one thing in common — none of them are running for re-election in 2022.
Missour Sen. Roy Blunt is retiring. North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr is retiring. Ohio Sen. Rob Portman is retiring. Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey is retiring.
None of those four will be able to be held accountable by voters.
The other six hold seats that are not up for re-election in 2022.
Interesting.
What a strange coincidence. Who could have seen that coming?
I find it difficult to believe them caving on the Second Amendment is a coincidence or being done without the blessing of Republican Senate leadership.
According to The Daily Iowan, Sen. Chuck Grassley said he is “encouraged” to see the senators making headway on issues such as mental health, school safety and “curtailing gun violence.”
Grassley said he needs to see the legislative text before making his final decision on how he’ll vote.
I predict Grassley will vote against the measure, but only because he is up for re-election in 2022 — not because he is actually bothered by the effort.
We will see. I could be wrong.
When most of the language in the proposed Senate bill is unconstitutional, it should be flat out rejected. But that’s not the criteria Grassley goes by. He goes by ambiguous “common sense” which ignores common law and inalienable rights.
But he’s safe for now, having “won” the primary without having to debate Jim Carlin and exposing his weaknesses.
