Today, Congresswoman Ashley Hinson (IA-01) introduced the Pregnant Students’ Rights Act, legislation to ensure pregnant women are given proper information about their rights and resources and supported on campus.

Navigating college can be difficult for pregnant students, and in many cases, women feel pressured to end their pregnancies or risk academic failure, despite protections. Hinson’s legislation will ensure that young women know about the protections and options available to them.

“College students who are pregnant or may become unexpectedly pregnant deserve to know all of the resources available to them, and it is unacceptable that so many are told that abortion is their only option. Young women should feel empowered to choose life and create the best future for both themselves and their child.” -Congresswoman Ashley Hinson

The Pregnant Students’ Rights Act is supported by the Susan B. Anthony List, Students for Life Action, Family Research Council, Feminists for Life, and U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

“No woman should ever be forced to choose between her education and her children, yet even in 21st century America this still occurs far too often,” said the Honorable Marilyn Musgrave, SBA List. “The Pregnant Students’ Rights Act helps ensure that expectant mothers on campus are informed about real life-affirming options available to them and their right to be free from discrimination – truly empowering rather than pushing them into the arms of the profit-driven abortion industry. Congresswoman Hinson continually demonstrates what it means to be a pro-life, pro-woman leader and we thank her for raising this important legislation.”

“We are grateful to Congresswoman Hinson for introducing the Pregnant Students’ Rights Act. When a college student finds out she is unexpectedly pregnant, it can be incredibly challenging to envision a path forward. Women—especially moms—are strong and innovative, but for too long colleges have told women that their unborn child is an impediment to their success. The Pregnant Students’ Rights Act ensures that moms who are unexpectedly pregnant won’t be bullied into believing abortion is their best or only option. Instead, these women will be offered the tools they need to succeed while being a mother to future generations of students.” Mary Szoch, Director of the Center for Human Dignity, Family Research Council

“As a pro-life, student-oriented group, Students for Life Action is intimately aware of the unique challenges pregnant and parenting women face on their college campuses. We’ve met numerous women who have suffered from the lack of awareness of their legal rights after becoming unexpectedly pregnant during their college years. This has led to countless young women dropping out of college or having an abortion due to the fear – and sometimes coercion from teachers or peers – that their academic ambitions, leadership and athletic positions, or career prospects would be lost if they continued their pregnancy. Colleges must rectify this injustice by better informing their students of the legal protections and resources available to pregnant and parenting students. This underserved population of students deserve to be embraced with the love and support that empowers them to reach their professional and educational goals regardless of pregnancy status. When women are well-informed about the resources and support available to them, they’re more likely to choose Life. And that’s a choice that all should celebrate, regardless of their views on abortion.” -Kristan Hawkins, President of Students for Life Action

“Feminists for Life of America enthusiastically supports the Pregnant Students’ Rights Act, sponsored by Rep. Ashley Hinson, and urges co-sponsors from across the political aisle to unite behind this bill,” said FFL President Serrin M. Foster. “After working with administrators and students on hundreds of college and university campuses across the country, I know that many health centers and counselors refer students to abortion clinics but rarely discuss the rest of the choices, the resources that are available on campus and in the community. Pregnant students have a right to know.”
