Yesterday, Senate Democrats voted against bipartisan legislation from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) that would impose sanctions on businesses associated with the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. Worse yet, this bill was required to meet a 60-vote threshold, meaning that Senate Democrats filibustered a bill that won support from several members of their own party.
So, after spending weeks and months trying to decry the filibuster as unjust and a “relic of the past,” Democrats employed the filibuster to help deliver for Vladimir Putin.
The nearly complete Russian pipeline to Germany would greatly increase Russia’s leverage over Europe’s energy supply, yet the Biden Administration has lobbied against this effort by Cruz to try and hamper its ability to operate. The lobbying for appeasement worked, and Democrats are scrambling for a way to save face as Vladimir Putin celebrates another win.
In other words, Senate Democrats voted against this bill because they are too afraid to take bold action against the Putin pipeline that could cause major geopolitical problems within the NATO bloc.
Statement from NRSC Spokesman T.W. Arrighi: “The Nord Stream 2 pipeline is an unprecedented geopolitical problem and once again, Vladimir Putin is poised to emerge victorious thanks to the weakness of Senate Democrats and the Biden Administration. Time and time again they prove themselves unwilling, or perhaps too afraid, to take bold action against direct threats from our adversaries, all while consistently voting to kill pipeline jobs in the United States and the further production of American energy. Weak and hypocritical – a nasty combination for Senate Democrats.”
