A bill moving through the Iowa Legislature to install and maintain adult changing stations in facilities at certain rest areas will cost between $80,000 and $100,00 from the Primary Road Fund.

That figure is based on an average of four renovations per year.

An adult changing station is defined as an adult changing table placed within an enclosed restroom facility or another similar facility that is for use by persons with disabilities who need assistance with diapering.

The DOT has 38 rest areas throughout the state. Nineteen are considered modern rest areas by the DOT.

Older rest areas may require significant remodeling efforts to accommodate adult changing stations. The DOT estimates cost to install an adult changing station in a modern rest area to be between $20,000 and $25,000.
