We are going to publish the Iowa Republican Party platform piece by piece. Today we start with the preamble. We hope that Republicans across the state will read each and every one of these articles and reflect on what the platform states the GOP believes. And we hope that elected Republicans will do the same. They are not words on a piece of paper.

According to Wikipedia, a political party platform is a formal set of principle goals that are supported by a political party or individual candidate in order to appeal to the general public for the ultimate purpose of garnering the general public’s support and votes about complicated topics or issues.

Let us embrace these principles, even when they’re “controversial” or “complicated.” Let us not abandon them.

PREAMBLE:

As Republicans, we uphold the principles of individual responsibility and liberty, adherence to traditional moral standards, a strong national defense, a free enterprise system and equal rights for all. Respect for the sanctity of human life, and freedom of religion and the free exercise thereof.

We believe in retaining the original intent of our Constitution. We believe high moral character is a necessity for public servants. The highest standard of character should be embodied in both private and public life. We encourage the proliferation of these principles and their passage to future generations.
