This week the Iowa Senate unanimously passed a bill that will prohibit the use or creation of bots to purchase more than the posted limit for internet ticket sales to events in Iowa.

Senate File 146 breezed through the chamber by a 47-0 vote. Democrat State Sen. Liz Bennett said it is a “good piece of bipartisan legislation” to protect the consumers of Iowa.

Democrat State Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott said it’s an important bill for Taylor Swift fans as the issue has plagued Iowans for too long.

Republican State Sen. Jeff Reichman introduced the bill while his GOP colleague State Sen. Kerry Gruenhagen managed the bill. Gruenhagen said it is nearly impossible for regular citizens to purchase event tickets online because of the use and creation of such bots.

Ticket sellers are required to report violations and the attorney general has exclusive authority to enforce the bill through civil action.
