On Wednesday, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries released the following statement:
The Trump administration’s decision to gut the Department of Education is a reckless, foolish and vicious act designed to rip away high-quality education from our most vulnerable children. It is intended to disorient and distract the American people from the fact that costs are rising. Donald Trump and House Republicans are crashing the economy in real time and driving the nation into recession. In the meantime, they are robbing children of educational opportunity and a shot at the American dream. Teachers will be fired, class sizes will soar and kids with disabilities will be left behind.
The Department of Education was created by an act of Congress and only Congress has the power to close it. The Trump administration is breaking the law. Democrats will continue to aggressively push back in Congress, the Courts and across our communities.
