As Mother’s Day approaches, thoughts of Mom and motherhood become more predominant in our daily lives.
As most of you know, I was not raised by my natural mother. For the first ten years of my life, I was raised by my foster mother, Rebecca Molet. For those first few years, she was the only mother I knew. She became my “Mom.”
Whatever your family situation growing up, all of us have had a mother. She may have been the one who nurtured you and comforted you when you encountered difficulties from skinned knees to broken hearts. Or, as in my case, she may have been absent.
From the years of “Leave It to Beaver” and “Ozzie and Harriet” through the rebellion of the 1960s to this third decade of the 21st century, motherhood has taken on a variety of descriptions and connotations. Several years ago, as the cameras panned the sidelines of professional football games, the three hundred plus pound linemen would mouth “Hi Mom!” to the camera. I no longer watch professional football, but I don’t see that same attitude toward Mom in much of our culture today.
What is the role of mothers in American society today? Single motherhood is at an all-time high. Women and girls raising children alone magnifies the importance of what it means to be a mother. The impact of mothering cannot be overstated. Mothers bring an indispensable aspect to parenting. I believe that women are designed by our Creator to be the nurturers and caregivers of the family. Men are the protectors and providers. Fathers need to nurture and be caring as well but mothers are uniquely qualified to be the ones to whom we go when we need compassion and understanding.
