Vice President Kamala Harris spoke to the American Federation of Teachers’ National Convention on Thursday. During her remarks, she criticized Republicans for efforts to defend democracy by ensuring and strengthening election integrity and for trying to keep sexually explicit materials out of schools.
“Ours is a fight for the future. And ours is a fight for freedom,” Harris said. “In this moment, across our nation, we witness a full-on attack on hard-won, hard-fought freedoms. While you teach students about democracy and representative government, extremists attack the sacred freedom to vote.”
She then credited AFT members for creating “safe and welcoming places” while blasting “extremists” who “attack our freedom to live safe from gun violence.”
“They have the nerve to tell teachers to strap on a gun in the classroom while they refuse to pass commonsense gun safety laws,” Harris said. “And while you teach students about our nation’s past, these extremists attack the freedom to learn and acknowledge our nation’s true and full history, including book bans. Book bans in this year of our Lord 2024.
“On these last two issues — on these a- — last two issues, just think about it. So, we want to ban assault weapons, and they want to ban books.”
Harris also drew applause from the educators when she vowed to ensure women have the “freedom” to abort future students rather than provide life to future students.
Ironically, seconds after championing the “right” to have unborn babies killed before birth, Harris said voting for Democrats is voting for a country of “compassion.”
