Dear Republicans of the Iowa Legislature,

I thought for sure I was reading it wrong but right there it is – the Iowa legislature MANDATING to private companies!  It was my understanding throughout this entire pandemic the Iowa legislature’s stance was it does NOT feel that is should make laws mandating to private companies.  I don’t like to think how this change may have come about, but it would appear it ALSO has something to do with lobbyists as per the recent newsletter from Representative Lee Hein – https://theiowastandard.com/rep-hein-law-forcing-gas-stations-to-offer-e-15-gas-moves/?fbclid=IwAR050Hz-_pPIunF_0lJDihdjN8_xvu9Ko0rgjmhdb5Jlvq5DWiLbjzk8KI4

I recall MANY CITIZEN LOBBYISTS at the Capitol asking for help to just keep their jobs regardless of their private medical decisions, after which you enthusiastically passed a bill that helped them get on unemployment.  Then the legislature turns around and writes a bill that helps the ethanol lobby by mandating PRIVATE citizens buy something to put in their cars – because that is essentially what is happening with HF 2128.  So if I have it straight, the Iowa legislature will not step in to help keep experimental drugs out of our bodies but is all in with mandating what we put in our cars.  If you don’t think this is how Iowans view this bill, think again.  This is outrageous!

Additionally, the legislature has before it a couple of bills requiring me to use a hands free device to talk on my phone in MY car.  Have you seen the screens to connect to phones in cars?  My eyes are diverted while pushing those buttons on that screen, too.   Are  we also going to make it illegal to have kids in the car, especially crying babies?  Eat?  Adjust the radio?  Smoke?  Drive in the rain/snow?  Those things are VERY distracting!

We already have distracted driving laws on the books.  I suggest spending some of that extra cash we have on hand to create a campaign to let Iowans know that these laws include cell phone usage.

Again, I am flabbergasted as to this new attitude of mandates for private businesses and private citizens from Republicans in the Iowa legislature.  I send you to the Capitol to PROTECT my freedoms.  I swear I break 3 or 4 laws just leaving my house!

Kill these bills!
