I wanted to write to you about the bond referendum for West Des Moines that will be voted on November 4. The referendum is one where WDM wants to take out a $135,000,000 bond. That number is correct. That will raise our taxes by about $260 annually, after they already went up over 20% this year. The taxes will go up in the future once they complete construction because when the building they are wanting to build next to the library on Mills Civic Parkway goes up, it will need to have employees, utilities, and maintenance. Our taxes are already high enough and the local education is not good enough for what we are paying. None of this funding would go towards a better education for WDM children and therefore a burden. I have two retired widows that live next to me, they don’t deserve to be pushed out of their properties because the city wants to place unnecessary tax burdens upon them.
WDM schools already have $101,000,000 in bonds that go through 2031. No more wasted money when it doesn’t go towards the betterment of education.
