One Iowa alerted followers to a subcommittee on House Study Bill 158 on Tuesday. The bill would ban minors from attending drag performances.
But the group also expressed a “safety warning” for Tuesday since Iowa Firearms Coalition is hosting its lobby day at the same time.
“Concealed firearms are allowed in the Capitol, meaning there will be many armed individuals in the rotunda,” the post read. “Avoid confrontation – escalation could create a dangerous situation for everyone.”
Earlier this month a protest by Democrats led to arrests. On Monday another protested by Democrats was staged and included vulgarities and shouting.
According to One Iowa’s post, Iowa State Patrol will have increased numbers, but the group encouraged people not to engage with law enforcement.
“This puts everyone at risk,” the post said. “Especially BIPOC and undocumented folks who face heightened dangers in police interactions. We stand in solidarity with the most marginalized voices. Your actions at the Capitol impact the entire group, not just you. Bring a buddy, make a safety plan and take breaks if needed.”
