The Mason City School District responded to an open records request filed by The Iowa Standard and said after checking with principals in the district, there were no building-level surveys asking students questions related to their sexuality, sexual orientation, gender identity, preferred names, political leanings or preferred pronouns of students in grades 6-12.

Teachers were asked to report if they asked for any of the topics listed, and just one reported asking students to provide the name they prefer to be called at the beginning of the course.

No parents have reported to The Iowa Standard any incidents in the district thus far.
