Iowa House Democrat State Rep. Angel Ramirez told fellow Democrat Rep. Ken Croken in his “Daily Digest” video series that House File 2253 — which changes Iowa Code terminology from “pregnant person” to “pregnant female” — is just legislation part of a “one-sided culture war.”
Croken said the bill is another example where the legislature isn’t making policy, but instead “making a point.”
Ramirez said it is “medically inaccurate” and “wildly immoral.”
“Instead of focusing their energy on things that would actually help everyday Iowans,” Ramirez said. “I believe that it will negatively harm huge populations of our LGBTQ+ community members.”

The bill passed the Iowa House 69-22.
Democrat Representatives Daniel Gosa, Keenan Judge, Eric Gjerde and Elizabeth Wilson voted with Republicans in support. Twenty-two Democrats — including Representatives Austin Baeth and Megan Srinivas, who are medical doctors — voted against the changing “pregnant person” to “pregnant female” in Iowa law.
Democrat Representatives Lindsay James and Josh Turek, who are both running for federal office, were absent from the vote.
