Rep. Andy McKean (D-Anamosa) gained national headlines last year when he left the Republican Party and joined Democrats. It was an interesting turn from McKean after he had accepted $111,954 from the Iowa Republican Party in 2016. He was given $3,267.50 from the Iowa Republican Party in 2018.
McKean also had no problem sharing the ballot with Donald Trump in 2016. Trump won the district by nearly 21 points. Yet McKean couldn’t remain a Republican because of Trump.
It should be noted that McKean wasn’t the most reliable vote among Republican members of the Iowa House. But it was how he chose to identify when running for office.
According to campaign finance reports submitted earlier this year, McKean has found a way to make up for the money he won’t receive from the GOP — coastal elites.
McKean has turned to ActBlue and out-of-state donors.
In 2019, based on the report filed in January, McKean raised $23,377 from out-of-state donors.
Who knows how much money he’s actually raised from people who live in his district.
While the liberal, out-of-state, coastal elites donate in an effort to save McKean, his fate will be left up to the voters in his district, where it belongs.
