In a political climate where the sanctity of life should be non-negotiable, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks has repeatedly demonstrated that her “pro-life” label is little more than a checkbox on a campaign form. Her voting record and public statements betray a troubling lack of passion for protecting the unborn, and her actions in Congress have actively undermined the cause she claims to support.
Let’s start with the most glaring contradiction: Miller-Meeks has consistently voted to fund Planned Parenthood. Despite its role as the nation’s largest abortion provider, she has supported continuing resolutions (CRs) that include full funding for the organization. These votes are not isolated incidents—they reflect a pattern of prioritizing political expediency over principle. Every CR she’s backed has been loaded with what many in the pro-life movement rightly call “pro-death” provisions, yet she has never publicly objected to them.
Even more damning is her support for military-funded abortions. In July 2023, Miller-Meeks voted for the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which included provisions allowing taxpayer-funded abortion travel for service members. This vote directly contradicts the Hyde Amendment’s spirit and undermines decades of pro-life legislative progress.
Her rhetoric is equally revealing. Before entering Congress, Miller-Meeks was recorded on video stating she was “pro-choice”. Since then, she has offered no meaningful clarification or public repentance for that stance. Instead, she has adopted a vague, checkbox-style approach to the issue—never speaking passionately about the unborn, never championing pro-life legislation, and never engaging with the movement’s moral urgency.
In fact, when faced with a vote that could have defunded Planned Parenthood and protected women’s health care from politicized manipulation, she simply walked out of the room. During a May 2025 markup session in the Energy & Commerce Committee, Miller-Meeks was present for most of the hearing but skipped the vote on an amendment that would have removed language defunding Planned Parenthood. Her absence spoke volumes.
Contrast this with true pro-life champions who fight tooth and nail to protect the unborn—who speak boldly, vote consistently, and never compromise. Miller-Meeks’ record is one of silence, avoidance, and complicity. Her 0% rating from Reproductive Freedom for All in 2024 reflects her failure to stand firm even when the stakes are highest.

As for Zach Nunn, he has shown a pattern of retreat when pressed on abortion—raising his hand for a total ban, then backpedaling when challenged. His evasiveness reveals a lack of conviction.
While Zach may not represent Iowa’s 1st District, his record on abortion deserves scrutiny—especially as national pro-life organizations attempt to prop him up as a champion for life. The truth is far less flattering.
In a 2022 GOP primary debate, Nunn raised his hand in support of banning all abortions with no exceptions—not for rape, incest, or the life of the mother. That moment was captured on video and used in multiple campaign ads. But when confronted about it later, he tried to walk it back, claiming he supports some exceptions. This contradiction reveals not just inconsistency, but cowardice. When the pressure mounted, Nunn distanced himself from the very stance he publicly endorsed.
In 2024, Nunn again dodged the issue. When asked whether he supported a federal abortion ban, he refused to give a clear answer, instead offering vague language about “state-level solutions” and “protecting life” without committing to any specific policy. This kind of political hedging is exactly what the pro-life movement must reject. Lives are at stake, and half-measures or rhetorical gymnastics won’t cut it.
Nunn’s record also includes support for a constitutional amendment in Iowa that could eliminate abortion rights entirely, with no exceptions. Yet he rarely speaks about the unborn with any urgency or moral clarity. Like Miller-Meeks, he treats the pro-life label as a political accessory, not a conviction.
If national organizations are serious about defending life, they must stop endorsing candidates who run from the issue when it matters most.
The pro-life movement deserves leaders who treat the issue as a moral imperative, not a political accessory. Miller-Meeks and Nunn have has shown no such urgency. Their records are not just disappointing—they are disqualifying for anyone who believes that life begins at conception and deserves protection from that moment forward.
And they certainly don’t deserve aggressive support canvassing from the Susan B. Anthony pro-life organization.
It’s time to demand better. Iowa’s Congressional Districts deserve Representatives who will not just check the box but carry the banner for life.
