Statement from Republican State Rep. Cindy Golding on HSB 242, a bill repealing gender identity from the civil rights code and restoring protections based on sex while also defining words like “sex,” “gender,” “male,” “female,” “man,” “woman,” etc.

This legislation is necessary to support all the measures we have taken to protect women’s sports, protect children from grooming, and protect women’s secure spaces. Without this correction to our Code, the other laws may be overturned by the Iowa Supreme Court. I am in favor of strengthening measures to protect ALL Iowans from real discrimination, but we also need to protect Iowans from a perceived “injustice”. It is just as discriminatory to require someone to support a belief that defies physical truth!
