Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. (R-MD), Acting Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Agriculture Subcommittee, issued the following statement on Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott’s plan to pay squeegee kids to stop their criminal activity. Today, details of the mayor’s “Squeegee Collaborative Plan” were announced showing a shocking guaranteed income program for squeegee kids if they follow a “code of conduct to regulate themselves.” Crime has increased dramatically in Baltimore, including criminal activity related to squeegee kids, with many of the cases involving terrorizing drivers, passengers, and residents. Last week, it was reported that three squeegee kids were arrested for stealing a phone at an intersection and then transferring large sums of money from the victim to themselves via a cash app scam. This comes on the heels of reports of several attempted murder and assault cases involving squeegee kids in Baltimore City.

“Now we know why the mayor delayed his announcement until after the election–because Democrats plan to reward criminal behavior with hard-earned taxpayer dollars. Being in the new majority on the House Appropriations committee, I’ll do everything in my power to make sure that not a single federal dime goes to this program that rewards criminal activity. Clearly, Baltimore City has too much money on its hands as a result of the wasteful spending bills passed by the Biden Administration and the Pelosi House majority. We will never be able to restore law and order if we reward criminal activity – whether it’s on the streets of Baltimore or at the open southern border. Shamefully, Baltimore leadership not only defunds and demoralizes the police, but they are now starting to reward criminal activity with hard-earned taxpayer dollars.”
