The Iowa Standard reached out to all federal and state legislative candidates to find out where they stand on the idea of defunding police and abolishing both the police and prisons. This idea is supported by Des Moines Black Lives Matter.

Republican State Rep. Sandy Salmon is being challenged by Democrat Carissa Froyum.

Rep. Salmon’s response: “Absolutely not! The most basic primary purpose of government is to protect and defend its people and their property. And that’s what the police force and prison system accomplish. If you had to get rid of all government agencies and programs, the last to go would be law enforcement. This should not even need to be a point of discussion.”
