State Rep. Sandy Salmon is one of four candidates from Iowa who has signed “The Big Family Pledge” from the American Principles Project. She joins Rep. Jeff Shipley we featured as a signer of the pledge last week.
The pledge encompasses five issues, all of which Rep. Salmon has introduced legislation for.
“All these issues here involve protecting girls, protecting women, protecting children from ideologies that get taught in the classroom,” Salmon said. “Gender identity, sexual orientation and gender fluidity — all those types of things — and pornography, that’s also an issue that is cropping up. We’re seeing pornographic materials in schools now and trying to bring that to heel. And then, of course, the life issue. I’ve fought for that for years. I’ve introduced bills on every one of those topics for many years now.”
You might call it the Representative Sandy Salmon Pledge.
“I have been involved with all those issues,” she said. “It’s not popular and you have to overcome opposition. People are just afraid of crossing the LGBT agenda. They’re afraid of getting labeled a hater, you know.”
The pledge includes five planks:
- Defend girls’ sports by prohibiting biological males from participating, including at the collegiate level;
- Protect children from experimental “gender transition” procedures, including irreversible surgeries, chemical castration, and psychiatric neglect;
- Let kids be kids and protect them from dangerous and divisive propaganda being taught in schools, such as critical race theory and gender ideology;
- Safeguard children from exposure to pornography, obscenity, and indecency;
- Protect life from conception to natural death.
American Principles Project notes that families are under “relentless attack by woke left-wing activists who seek to undermine parents.”
“These radicals believe that the government — not parents — should have the final say over the upbringing of our children,” the website states. “This ideology is outrageous and should be rejected emphatically. Our leaders must defend families at all costs.”
Salmon said she has always been pro-family and has always campaigned that way.
“I think family is so important, you know — God, family, country,” she said. “That’s what I’ve always run on and always stood for. If the family isn’t in place, and in the way that we understand that as — as God laid out in the Scriptures — if the family isn’t in place in that way, all of society tends to have fractures and crumbles.”
This pledge is unique from other pledges candidates are invited to take in that Salmon said she’s never seen one touching on all the different issues.
