As a proud Iowan, born and raised in Sibley, and now serving my fifth term as State Representative for House District 10, I’ve seen Iowa’s political landscape evolve with the grit and determination that defines our state. My 25 years in the Military, coupled with my work as a conservation worker and small business owner, have shaped my approach to governance: practical, conservative, and rooted in service to Northwest Iowa. Today, Iowa politics reflects a blend of our traditional values—hard work, fiscal responsibility, and community—while grappling with modern challenges like economic growth, water quality, and individual liberties.
Iowa’s political scene remains firmly conservative, with Republicans holding strong majorities in both the House and Senate. This reflects the will of Iowans who value limited government and free markets. As Speaker Pro Tempore, I’ve worked alongside colleagues to advance policies that keep Iowa thriving. In 2022, we passed a historic $1.9 billion income tax cut, easing the burden on hardworking families and businesses. I’m not done yet—I believe we can further simplify our tax code to make Iowa even more competitive. Lower taxes mean more money in Iowans’ pockets, fueling local economies from Spirit Lake to Des Moines.
Yet, politics isn’t just about dollars and cents. Our rural roots demand we protect our natural resources. My background in environmental policy drives my advocacy for clean water, sensible agriculture, and flood control measures. The Iowa Great Lakes Watershed Management Plan, which I helped shape, addresses sediment and phosphorus runoff—a real threat to our lakes and streams. We’ve made strides, but balancing farming needs with conservation remains a priority. Iowans deserve clean water and a strong agricultural economy, and I’m committed to finding solutions that respect both.
Recent legislative sessions, like 2025, show our focus on practical governance. We tackled pharmacy benefit manager reforms to lower prescription costs and debated eminent domain for carbon-capture pipelines—a contentious issue in my district. I’ve heard from constituents, who oppose projects like Summit Carbon Solutions. Their voices matter, and I strive to listen. My door is always open to discuss how we can protect property rights while advancing Iowa’s energy future.
Iowa’s politics also reflect our commitment to fairness. The 2025 session saw bills like House File 2568, expanding pedestrian definitions to include bicyclists and those using wheelchairs, ensuring safer roads for all. But challenges remain. With 6 people being charged with felony voting charges in the state it highlights the need for clearer communication on voting laws. Iowans deserve an accessible, secure voting system, and I’ll keep pushing for that balance.
As a veteran and father, I see Iowa’s future through the lens of service and sacrifice. Our politics must honor the work ethic of our farmers, the ingenuity of our small businesses, and the values of our communities. By staying grounded in conservative principles, engaging with all perspectives, and tackling tough issues like water quality and tax reform, Iowa can remain a beacon of opportunity. I’m proud to fight for Northwest Iowa, and I’ll keep rolling up my sleeves to get the job done.
