The Republican Party of Iowa announced that the 2020 State Convention, which is scheduled for Saturday, June 13th, will not be convening in person due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the State Central Committee voted unanimously to mail paper ballots to all state convention delegates.

“The GOP State Convention would require over 1,500 Iowans from every county to convene at a central location in Polk County, and then return home to their respective counties. It’s simply not feasible to plan an event that large at this time. A mail-in ballot process will still allow us to conduct essential party business, including electing delegates to the national convention and approving the Iowa GOP platform,” said Aaron Britt, Spokesman for the Republican Party of Iowa.

Using paper ballots for the district convention process proved to be an overwhelming success. RPI reports that over 80 percent of delegates participated in the mail-in process, which is higher participation than in-person district conventions.

More updates will be posted to www.iowagop.org/conventions as they become available.
